One of Spain’s most popular regions, the north of the Iberian peninsula has a long and rich history of invasion and settlement. The Celts, Visigoths, Romans, Moors, and Iberians have all left their mark, with beautiful cities and historic sites. Take this 8-day tour of the north of Spain to discover a treasure-chest of sites and see spectacular coastline and countryside as you drive. Departing Madrid, you will head north for Zaragoza and San Sebastian, stop off in the energetic city of Bilbao, travel through the mountains of the Picos de Europa, go on a panoramic tour of Asturias and Galicia, and much more. Accommodation each night will be in centrally-located 3 or 4-star hotels, providing comfort and convenience throughout your journey. Day 1: Madrid - Zaragoza - Bilbao Depart Madrid at 8:00 AM for Zaragoza. Stop for a while to explore the city, noted for its Cathedral and the Aljaferia Palace, and its splendid fusion of Islamic, Romanesque, and Gothic architecture. Continue to Bilbao for dinner and an overnight stay. Day 2: Bilbao - Santillana - Santander Wake up for breakfast and a panoramic tour. Set off on bus/walking tour of the avant-garde buildings to the traditional quarters of the reborn city of Bilbao. Marvel at the amazing exterior of the Guggenheim Museum. Continue to Santillana del Mar, a picturesque town considered a national monument for its many historic buildings. Head to Santander for dinner and an overnight. Day 3: Santander - Covadonga - Oviedo Depart from Santander after breakfast and travel to Covadonga, driving through the Picos de Europa mountains and passing splendid landscapes. You will have free time to visit the shrine of Our Lady of Covadonga at the mountainous basilica. Head to Oviedo for dinner and an overnight stay at the 4-star Gran Hotel Regente or alternate accommodation. Day 4: Oviedo - Gijon - Lugo Travel to Gijón after breakfast and explore the second capital of the Asturias region. You will get a short panoramic tour before heading to Luarca, Ribadeo, and Lugo in the lush green region of Galicia. Enjoy dinner and an overnight stay at the 4-star Gran Hotel Lugo or alternative accommodations. Day 5: Lugo - La Coruña Depart for La Coruña and go on a short panoramic tour. See the lighthouse Tower of Hercules, and the characteristic glazed window balconies of the houses. In the afternoon, there is an optional excursion to the Rías Altas that takes you through typical villages, such as Pontedeume, and Betanzos. Dinner and accommodation is at the 4-star Tryp Coruña in La Coruña. Day 6: La Coruña - Santiago de Compostela Leave for Santiago de Compostela after breakfast and take a city tour of the legendary pilgrimage town. Visit sites such as Plaza del Obradoiro and the imposing Cathedral, said to be the burial site of one of the apostles of Jesus. The rest of the afternoon is free for you to enjoy at leisure. You will have dinner and spend the night in Santiago de Compostela at the 4-star Gran Hotel Santiago. Day 7: Santiago de Compostela - Rias Bajas - Vigo After breakfast head to the area of the Spanish Fjords (Rias Bajas), passing through splendid landscapes, such as La Toja Island, Ría de Arosa, and Pontevedra. Continue to Vigo for dinner and accommodation in the 4-star Hesperia Vigo. Day 8. VIGO - MADRID (Sunday) Breakfast. We will begin our journey through the Galician Mountains to return to Madrid crossing the Castilian region.
